A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher is a southern gothic story following a middle-aged woman named Samantha as she returns to her old hometown to help take care of her ailing mother. But when her mother's ailments turn into something paranormal - and old relatives come back to bite - she questions everything she knows, including her connection to the monsters that might lurk just beneath her old childhood house.
I'm not usually one for horror or for gothic narratives, but T. Kingfisher flew me away. She was a highly recommended author, and she did not disappoint. I listened to the story via audiobook, and it became even stronger as I continued reading. Kingfisher is a master of building tension and writing authentic characters, and I loved reading this story about Samantha and her growing relationships with those in her hometown. It was absolutely haunting, a definite 10/5 star read! I'll be diving into her other books in no time!
