As someone who grew up with an abusive father and a religious household, this really hit home. It's actually wild how some of the conversations and complexities match some of my experiences. It is a tough read but shit what a valuable story. The racism is tough.
The pain of the children is so so tough. The glorifying of the abuser is unimaginably tough. But Pat Conroy captured some real and powerful things in here.
