Nothing actually happens until the last 7 or 8 chapters. Before that is a lot of unnecessary back story and family drama.

Blatant racism (Odessa, the one black character is referred to as "the black woman" more often than her own name) definite misogyny, every Southern trope you can imagine are among the main points.
