With the hype around this book I was expecting to really love it but it fell flat for me unfortunately.
I was intrigued by the world and the magic system but I found the pacing a bit off. Not much happens for 60% of the book, just world building and setting up the later end of the book and the larger storyline isn’t established until then and then everything happens all at once.
I also found the whole oppression storyline lacklustre. The whole book was basically just… Sciona discovers racism and structural mechanisms of oppression…wow! It felt very simplistic and saviour-y And then she falls in love with the oppressed and takes it upon herself to fix it all! I found her a pretty unlikeable character so the ending didn’t carry the emotional weight it was probably meant to.
