The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen

2.0

With the hype centered around this book, I thought it would be a sure win with magic and a competent female retaking her throne BUT I was sadly disappointed.

The heroine was male obsessed. It didn't matter how old they were. Their attractiveness or lack thereof had to be mentioned. The world building made absolutely no sense and prevented me getting invested in anything written on the page. The magic was interesting but the antagonist was sorely underwhelming. She was supposed to be an evil mage queen, but she was more of a lackluster pawn for some other baddy.

The only positives were that the heroine was a competent ruler and her story does intrigue me. Unfortunately, the negatives outweighed these positives.

Just not my cup of tea.
