Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
3.0

Hmmm... what are my thoughts on Clockwork Prince? They are very conflicted. For one, the plot is kind of boring, and it follows the same pattern as the Mortal Instruments. Cassandra Clare has this bad habit of pairing up everyone at the end, and she has begun to do that in this book. Happy endings are not necessary, and while this book didn't end happily it sure looks like the series will conclude that way.
She really screwed Jessie's character over. That poor girl was very one dimensional, and so is Sophie at the moment. All of my questions that went unanswered about the first book were still unanswered because the story went off on a little side-plot about Will's life and what makes it acceptable for him to be a jerk. I still don't love Will. I know I am supposed to but he is so inconsistent.
My biggest critique of the last book was her unnecessary references to other novels, probably in an attempt to authenticate the 'Victorian' England setting, because they really bogged down the plot. This trend continues in this book, but instead of just referencing passages of other novels she almost full on quotes other novels. There was a part on page 339 that was a poorly paraphrased quote from Pride and Prejudice that had none of the appeal of Mr. Darcy:

"Tell me this truth of which you speak. If then you still desire no further connection with me, I will respect your wishes. I ask only for an hour or so of your time." His eyes pleaded with her. "Please?""

Uggh. That little bit about eyes pleading also made me want to throw out this book. Something has to be said about an author that can write a great love story and action novel in 300 or so pages. This book did not need to be 502 pages, and it's only the second installment of a series. Uh oh no thank you. Despite all of it's faults, I am giving it a three because the love triangle was okay and somewhat enjoyable. Yes that's right the love triangle was enjoyable. Sue me for liking it.
