The Stranger Upstairs
by Lisa M. Matlin
The scariest part of mental illness is not knowing if you’re crazy or imagining it. It’s the same with a body ache, am I dying or is it just indigestion? This book was a masterful stroke in everyone looking at you sideways as you descend into madness and all the while writing it off as just YOU. The masterful stroke was that she wasn’t crazy (at least not in the way you initially believe), but a victim of poisoning. The most satisfying part was after all the logical explanation of what transpired, the house did still appear to be haunted in the end. And who doesn’t love a genuinely haunted house? The only unsatisfying part was Joe was a dirtbag. Zero stars for him.
