Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

3.0

i finished this book 2 days ago. however the thing is i have a lot of thoughts but im actually really bad at writing book reviews i never know what to say other than just sporadically writing my thoughts (and i can never think of all of them when i want to).

i enjoyed reading this, but would probably never read it again. i’m glad i finished it but as someone who usually rereads books, i have no interest in revisiting it.

i don’t like the cheating trope, however i didn’t mind it here? i think it was done in a way that worked. and it being from frances’ point of view probably is why it worked

i hated all the characters, but i don’t think i was supposed to like any of them so that’s fine. i did feel sorry for frances despite not liking her and despite the fact that she’s her own worst enemy. bobbi is annoying as fuck and so is nick. melissa is just so irrelevant to me. i guess that last bit makes sense as it’s how frances viewed her.

sally rooney’s ability to convey dialogue and make every word mean SO much is phenomenal. i’ve noticed between this and normal people that she actually makes me enjoy reading a type of book that normally i would hate. i have a love/hate relationship with her lack of quotation marks. it’s always hard to get used to but it makes so much sense why she does it and it works so well.

also kinda irrelevant but i also read the last 150 pages of this on the DART in dublin on the way to and home from a rugby game and as a Certified Culchie i felt extremely pretentious the entire time.
