La fugitiva by Marcel Proust

4.0

Two-Haiku Synopsis:

1) Marcel is jealous
When Albertine goes away
SPOILER: She is dead.

2) Marcel is depressed
When Robert marries Gilberte
SPOILER: He is gay.

A bleak volume, indeed. More jealousy, both while Albertine lives and after she dies, followed by a fascination with trying to pin down Albertine's true sexual behaviors in as much gory detail as possible, ending with the pessimistic conclusion that a true phenomenological understanding of another person's life is impossible. That theme among lovers is reiterated among friends, with revelations of Robert's "inversion" after marrying Gilberte and reminiscences of Marcel and Gilberte's past relationship. Not even the excitement of Marcel finally becoming a published author lightens the mood, as it inevitably leads to disappointment upon reflection.
