In at the Deep End by Kate Davies

Really enjoyed this. Very different to anything I’ve read, quite dark at times and it’s packed with taboo sex and kink (which did nothing for me, this is definitely not smut!) but also some very heartfelt moments which towards the end genuinely had me tearing up.

Julia isn’t my favourite protagonist, she has no drive and she’s submissive (in a non sexual sense) but the story wouldn’t make sense if she wasn’t those things as it’s about her finding her drive and finding her ability to be in control.

The cast of characters around her is fun and this book was so funny at times - I really think it struck a great balance of humour, depth, charm and lifelike crudeness.

I will say, if you came to this novel from it being mentioned in several reviews of Ghosts (Dolly Alderton) be aware they are NOTHING alike - this is how I found this novel and now really do not understand the comparisons!

It was also lovely to see somebody come out in such an exciting and drama free way - a refreshing LGBTQ+ story!
