Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews
4.0

This book didn't really have any relation to the large overarching plot line but it did shed some light on Kate's childhood. Kate learns things about her past that emotionally compromise her but there are bigger things afoot that she has to deal with. The bad guys were scary not for being the biggest and baddest out there but for how utterly human they were. In a world where magic reigns half the time just how would you feel if you didn't have access to it?
