Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

5.0

I never knew edgy Wizard of Oz was something I needed.

Paige's interpretations of both classic characters and new characters makes for some interesting developments, both inside and outside of Oz. Amy Gumm is a surprisingly fresh take on a tired trope, and her supporting cast is more of the same. I love how it starts so close to the original story by setting up main companions only to completely subvert that a few chapters later. It was a twist I wasn't really expecting and helped keep the story fresh.

Amy's tongue-in-cheek narration helps the plenty dark storyline from veering too dark while also adding a hint of humor too things. Honestly, there was never a time where Amy was ever grating, so I think Paige struck a wonderful balance with her protagonist.

Without going too far into spoiler territory, the edgy reimaginings of classic characters such as Glinda and the Tin Woodman were equal parts terrifying and believable. Paige did an amazing job introducing these characters without having anything seem too out of place.

That, on top of the story being engaging, well-written, and hard to put down, make it well worth a read.
