I think this book started out strong; however, the end was lackluster. I’m a fan of the premise but I actually didn’t know it was a romance, and I have some issues with the romance and pacing in the novel. There’s no real development— the couples basically meet and fall IN LOVE with each other. So the romance develops quickly but the broader plot seems to drag in comparison. I strongly believe that there was little to no character development, when one character especially *cough* Ramses *cough* should have character development.

In particular, I thought Elliot’s ending contradicted his character. Like yeah, he was gonna take the elixir, but to do it in the middle of a market while he was still being questioned by the governor seems questionable to me. He wants the best for his son but this seems like it would complicate things?? And Alex wasn’t privy to most of what happened so he wouldn't he just get a phone call saying “yo ur pops disappeared, sorry for ur loss”?? Also his dream of meeting Lawrence had me hoping he wouldn’t take the elixir, but I guess now they’ll never been reunited (alas, I was rooting for them).

Also I was soo hoping Julie would not take the elixir. I think that would be more suited to her character as just pages prior, she was saying she would never take the elixir, and then she does so in the end. I don’t know though, I’m not a huge fan of this romance plot, so I also just wish she was strong enough to say no, because she admits that’s what is ethically “right”.
