Upgrade by Blake Crouch

Absolutely phenomenal! This book reads like a movie, it's begging for an adaption.

Set in a near future, where a massive genetically modified induced famine has wiped out 2% of the global population, combined with rampant climate change, the world is both recognisable and unrecognisable from our own in a very scary way.

Due to the major advancements in sciences and the gene sequencing event that led to the famine, genetic research is largely illegal and has a huge black market for unnatural animals and minor body mods.

Logan is one of the scientists responsible for the famine, but has joined the newly formed government agency to prevent further disasters. During a raid, he is targeted with a genetically modified virus, which starts to change his DNA into something superhuman. Betrayed by his own agency, he is on the run and trying to stop the upgrade he received from wiping out even more of humanity and what makes us human.

Thrilling and immersive from beginning to end, and brimming with hard science, the blend of dystopian with sci-fi gene mods was fantastic and exploring the origins of this sci-fi classic trope was like nothing else I've ever read.
