This novella is a perfect companion to the Ashen series, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the story of the second book. Demi Winters continues to captivate readers with her lush, vibrant world-building and rich, fantastical lore. “Roots of Darkness” delivers on high-paced adventures, complex characters, and addictive relationships, making it a thoroughly engaging read.
One of Winters’ greatest strengths as an author is her ability to craft intriguing, multi-dimensional characters, and Hekla is a shining example. Shaped by past trauma, stubbornness, and a fierce will to survive, she emerges as a flawed yet strong and relatable protagonist. Even when her decisions may raise questions for the reader, we ultimately root for her, appreciating both her growth and her vulnerability.
“Fuck every patronizing man who disregarded her opinion because she lacked a certain appendage. Who brushed off her passion and called her temperamental. Who told her to smile, as though she needed to change herself to put them at ease. Fuck them all.”
Eyvind is another well-rounded character who aids in Hekla’s growth, helping her learn to trust and accept support from others. He is thoughtful and kind, yet unafraid to challenge Hekla’s stubborn streak. The ending left me eagerly anticipating how their relationship will continue to develop in the upcoming books of the series.
Demi Winters is solidifying her place as an auto-buy author for me. Her rich lore, intricate magic, and dynamic characters consistently keep me coming back for more.
