I don't know. The vibes and potential were there but something wasn't right. I felt like world building was chaotic. I understand that it's hard to write a standalone fantasy, but eg. Blood over bright haven worked. This didn't.
I also really didn't like anyone except Sylvia. Lorelei was just cold and I couldn't bring myself to symphony with her. The ending was like ??? and I get everyone who criticise the colonialism thing in this book.
It was all just too much - dark academia, murder mystery, magic, folklore, sapphic academic rivals to lovers. Maybe the author should have chosen more simple narrative.
Also, it wasn't badly written, I definitely read worse. And I really hope that the advocacy for colonialism and oppressed person (Lorelei) just making peace with oppression because hey, it could be worse! was unintentional is only a result of lack of understanding and thinking about this story. If not, then YIKES!
