This book ripped me apart in the best way. It should be predictable, given that the narrator tells us exactly what will happen in the first chapter, but Zusak masterfully crafts a narrative that is at once surprising and exactly what you expect. The narrator's identity also allows the narrative to follow and move along temporally in a way that is not limited to exclusively one character's past and present. Truly one of my favorite books I have ever read. Not a comfort, vacation, or weekend read.
