This is my first urban fantasy book, and I only read it at the absolute insistence of my husband, who loves the Dresden Files series. Let me tell you, I don’t listen to my husband often (I’m joking), but this time I’m so glad I did.
It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to do nothing but spend 100% of my time reading a book, the last one was [b:Red, White & Royal Blue|41150487|Red, White & Royal Blue|Casey McQuiston|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566742512l/41150487._SY75_.jpg|61657690] by Casey McQuiston. It’s also been a while since I’d been reading a book that consumed my mind 24/7, I’m looking at you [b:A Game of Thrones|13496|A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)|George R.R. All of this happened to me again as soon as I picked this sucker up. ALL.OF.IT!
Believe me, people, I don’t give out five stars lightly. An author and their book have to earn those five-star ratings from me, and son of a bitch Jim Butcher and his work of art, [b:Storm Front|47212|Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1)|Jim Butcher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1572991273l/47212._SY75_.jpg|1137060] , did just that.
This story was the perfect mix of crime thriller (my favorite genre) and fantasy. *chef’sfucking kiss*.
I related to Harry Dresden from the jump. He’s cynical, sarcastic, somewhat brash, and highly aware that, more often than not, life tends to be crap. Much like myself. This character and I had a lot in common, ya know, other than the whole wizard thing. He’s also a cat person, while I am wholeheartedly a dog person, but that’s just a minor detail in our weird fictional relationship.
If you had asked me if I would be roped into a fictional relationship with a wizard before reading this book, I would have told you no. But come on, Dresden gives off the biggest of bigdick energy. So, you can’t really blame me. Call me stupid, but I would chance a look into those dark eyes. . I’d be ready to risk it all for this guy. Ya’ll can have your Rhysand and Tamlin; Harry Dresden is the only magic man I need in my life. But I digress.
In most books over the years, wizards tend to be portrayed in a very Gandalfish way. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Gandalf just as much as the next person, but this new take on a wizard was so refreshing. I absolutely loved it.
The world Butcher built was so fun and captivating. Well, he built some of it since Dresden lives in Chicago, which is very much an actual place, but you get what I’m trying to say. The dialogue is amazing. Dresden’s banter with all the different characters was so fun. I loved it all. Butcher’s writing is detailed while still being easy to follow. It is a quick, entertaining read. Most of the chapters are short (give or take a few) and fly by.
This book had me hooked from start to finish. I can’t wait to pick up the rest of this series to see where Jim Butcher and Harry Dresden take me.
I’ll fight any woman in this series who tries to take my man. I’ll throw hands for him. I don’t care.
TLDR: EXCELLENT BOOK! READ IT! IF YOU'RE NEW TO FANTASY THIS IS AN AMAZING SERIES TO START WITH!
