rach 's review for:
Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More
by Kelly Sue DeConnick
I've mentioned in other reviews how much I love Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. She is such a fantastically strong woman, and a great role model, who doesn't back down from a cause she believes in, even in the face of impending death. This book, the start of a new run of Captain Marvel by Kelly Sue DeConnick (author of the 2012 run, as well) takes Carol somewhere we haven't seen her previous: SPACE!
The last run of Captain Marvel left Carol in an emotionally vulnerable place where she was trying to rebuild her life after losing her memories. When the opportunity arises to spend some time in space, assisting the Guardians of the Galaxy, it seems like a great option for Carol to get some distance and figure out herself and her life again.
It's really fun seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy pop up here, especially since their movie just came out this summer. I only wish we'd seen more of them, but I'm assuming we will over time. The majority of this book is spent with Carol's new friends, a plucky group of refugees she is trying to help defend themselves and their new planet from sickness, another forced relocation, and destruction.
There's a lot of history between these groups of people that I don't really know about, being relatively new to the Marvel universe, but Kelly Sue does a good job clueing us in to existing relationships, so I didn't spend too much time wondering what was going on and saying, "huh? Did I miss something?" Optimally, it would be nice to go back and read more about Star Lord's relationship with his father (which I now know is, even though that was only hinted at in the Guardians movie), and the near-destruction of his people. Most likely, though, I'll just keep reading Captain Marvel and depending on Kelly Sue filling me in on the details.
It's definitely been hard to not read each single issue as it comes out, especially as I am pretty involved in the Carol Corps community on tumblr, and it's hard to completely avoid spoilers. In the end, though, I definitely enjoy the comic experience more when I can read issues in chunks like they are presented in the trade paperbacks. I will do my best to stay patient, even though I desperately want to read the issue that talks more about Carol's cat Chewie!
I must also mention, I'm so excited that Marvel announced plans for a Captain Marvel movie!! It's set for 2018, which feels like SO far away, but I know it will be here before we can blink. I only hope that it promotes Carol to the stardom level of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, because she deserves it! Lots of other female superheroes deserve their own movies, too, so hopefully this is just the start of a trend.
