Death's End by Cixin Liu
3.0

3.5 stars.

You know how humanity, in search for extraterrestrial life, broadcasts signals into the universe in the hope for a response from intelligent life outside of the solar system? What if we finally receive a message back, but that message is completely empty except for this one sentence: “Be quiet or they will hear you?”. Welcome to Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.

Holy sheet, I think this trilogy gave me ~5 existential crisises while I was reading it. Insane story. If you like sci-fi, this trilogy is a must read!!

1st book (The Three-Body Problem): 5 stars, no doubt. 2nd book (The Dark Forest): 4.5 stars, terrifying.

I’d give the last book in this trilogy (Death’s End) 4.5 stars if it were just for the mind-bending science elements (lightspeed travel, black holes, 4-dimensional beings???), the crazy plot twists, the unparalleled scope of the story and the bittersweet ending. But the author kinda hates women I think ha. And the characters were just not very likable in this last one. I mean, even the super-intelligent aliens - that want do destroy every other civilization in our universe - were more likable that the humans in this book… That’s why I think it was more of a 3 star read for me. But also, the characters suddenly implement geochronoly in the last like 30 pages of the entire trilogy and they obviously deserve half a star for that. So, 3.5 stars.

Anyways, everyone should definitely read this trilogy. I don’t think I’ll find a sci-fi story anytime soon that would even come close to how good this was. The first two books are worth every poor character decision in the last book, I promise. You don’t want to miss out on this (and the Trisolarians)!!
