The Fifth Risk
by Michael Lewis
No matter your political stance, this book is a must read. Yes, he exposes actions from our current administration that we may never recover from. But what he does is expose what our government does for us, every day. From our weather service, to helping rural farmers plan their crops, Coast Guard search and rescue, how we deal with nuclear waste in Oregon and how we track plutonium and uranium around the world. The postal service and the Department of Commerce which, as the author deftly explains, only dedicates about 10% of its efforts to trade and most of it to collecting, interpreting, and effectively using information. There is no political agenda here and Mr. Lewis has a storied career as a journalist and investigator. There is a lot to learn here.
