Greenlights
by Matthew McConaughey
This normally isn’t the type of book I’d gravitate to, but we were offered free copies at work. Why not give it a read.
I really enjoyed the trees, not the forest of this book. McConaughey is a great storyteller and has lived a lot of interesting adventures. It was easy to get lost in the retellings of his life. He’s clearly mastered that part of his craft.
However, the ‘greenlights’ theme bothers me a bit. He’s a confident, handsome white guy with natural talent for acting pointing to all the green lights he’s had or ‘made’ in life. He claims it is a life approach to turn lights green, or another might say, chase the mythical American dream. He ignores the privileges that likely landed him that kind of success.
McConaughey is no sage, as he pretends to be with all the side sections and notes. I didn’t find any of them insightful or interesting, so I started to skip them. It was a better book without them. I think the reason his side poems and notes are not insightful is because he’s a guy who has had only ‘green lights’ to his success, facing no significant obstacles to his fame.
I give the stories 4 stars and the theme and side notes 2. I highly recommend ignoring the notes and side musings while reading.
