This book was a bit strange for me. This book is very out of my comfort zone because it's set in 1920s New York, and revolves a lot around gangsters. That's not something I've ever been interested in, but I wanted to give it a shot because:
  1. It's about vampires (which I love).
  2. I should try new things every once in a while--it's good for you.

Because of the above though, this book ended up being just fine. I wasn't overly obsessed with the setting, which made me a bit more disinterested than I would've been with a different one. The characters were very middle of the ground for me. I didn't really feel any type of way about them. And the plot was interesting, but (kind of) predictable.

In terms of the plot, it genuinely just kind of felt like something I'd read before. For example,
Elise's father
ending up as the villain just felt "been there, done that," and the rest wasn't' overly unique either.

I do think it was decently well written, but there were some points where I felt confused. It was hard to follow POV switches (especially it being in third person), and sometimes it just felt like characters were appearing out of thin air.

So, in general this book was just not for me. However, I can see why people could fall in love with it.
