The Fifth Season
by N.K. Jemisin
I was really craving a strong fantasy story with deep world building and this book delivered in spades. It's a slow burn and once all the pieces start coming together, it's very satisfying.
I did figure out that our viewpoint characters were the same woman (mostly based in the state of the world for each where the world is normal, the world is cracking, and the word is broken). The reveal still hit hard. It was skillfully done and all those little hints along the way will let a savvy reader put things together and will be enjoyable for a rereader.
And, while I do recognize that the second person segments are well written and adds to the oral storytelling vibe the narrative voice takes, I'm still not a covert to this POV style. That's a personal prefence for me. Someone else will probably love it.
On the whole, a good book. It was pretty harrowing and dark at times so, after a little break, I will look into borrowing the next one from the library.
