The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid
5.0

This book was exactly what I was looking for after the book hangover Zero Repeat Forever put me in.

It takes place in space. It’s got a murderous morally ambiguous protagonist who I immediately fell in love with, and constant mind games!

Nemesis was created with one purpose, to protect and love Donia at all costs. Nemesis is a generically engineered weapon. When her mistress, Donia, is called to the Capital to be held as a hostage by the Emperor, Nemesis goes in her place pretending to be Donia.

The court at the Capital consistently play mind games and I loved how Nemesis engaged with everyone. She constantly wants to kill everyone because it would be quicker than playing all of their games.

Tyrus, the Emperor’s crazy nephew, is a great character. I love how he was developed throughout the book. Can’t say too much more without spoilers.

I honestly didn’t get much out of the setting for this book besides it being in space. It was plot heavy and character development driven.

The one thing I didn’t enjoy, but it was just because it was unresolved was the fact that, in the beginning we learn how Nemesis doesn’t have feelings, and that they are manufactured for Donia. Throughout the novel Nemesis starts experiencing other feelings despite the introduction of Diabolics not being capable of at all. Maybe it will be explained in the next book, but it bothered me that there was no explanation.

Overall, I loved this book. Anxiously awaiting book two which comes out next month.
