The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

i’m writing this so i can remember why i rated it 4/5 and not higher.

loved the book, a great fantasy novel. there are many aspects of tolkiens writing that i admire, however some of these - no matter how admirable they are - sometimes felt as though they were added to reflect his own hobbies and interests rather than contributing to the story or plot in any way. it made some parts of the book boring to read, but i also feel as though these parts helped me feel connected to the world. this would include countless poems and songs, even in different languages, that never actually told a story that is relevant to the plot in any way. he also mentioned many different words for the same place or person, or mentioned ridiculous amounts of lineage for one singular character. this all resulted in me having two screens up of the entire genealogy tree in his universe, and an interactive map so that i can actually understand who they’re talking about and where they are.
