The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs
by Patricia B. McConnell
I really enjoyed this! It was a very thoughtful exploration of our relationship with dogs and did a good job reinforcing the concept of how much of a commitment and responsibility dogs can be. I enjoyed all of the little stories and the philosophical commentary about primates and canids. It IS philosophical and a little slow, so if you’re looking for a more direct how-to with clear cut instructions, this isn’t your book. This is something you pick up because you want to read about dogs or better understand your relationship with them, but isn’t necessarily a training manual. I would recommend this to anyone who interacts with dogs, really, but especially someone who hasn’t owned a dog before or hasn’t in a while and would like a moment to research and consider the impact to your lifestyle dogs inevitably come with.
