The Night Country
by Melissa Albert
dark
fast-paced
I guess this book wasn’t for me.
Even though I love dark fairy tales and magical realism, I just didn’t connect with the story.
I couldn’t sympathise with the MC. Her struggles never became my concern.
I loved the idea of the book, the world in it but the way the story was told didn’t grab me. And of course I hate the whole « this whole thing could have been avoided if this character hadn’t withheld this bit of information that was easily obtainable this whole time » trope.
Like to me, the big twist at the end didn’t feel like a twist, it felt like, … finally… that unknown thing, after TWO WHOLE BOOKS, of being dragged on is revealed. Fell flat.
The line « my mother prepared me so well to fight against the forces darkness » made me raise an eyebrow. Like seriously ? If she wanted to prepare you, she should have told you that !
So nope.
Bonus points for what it could have been. But that’s it.
