i want to start off with the good things. i adore kridtoffʼs style of writing, heʼs good at telling stories. the chronicled are beautifully written, thatʼs for sure. i liked nevernight and godsgrave a lot ( the thing that bothered me is that there was a character named after the Jewish God ? as a Jew, it wasnʼt really nice to read HaShemʼs name all over again. but i am glad that the name got changed in later editions ! ). i liked mia and ash in the first two books a lot, the plots were good. the footnotes were informative and i get why kristoff decided to put a lot of them, but they sadly disturbed my reading flow. as we got to the bad part: i absolutely HATED darkdawn. this book was a total mess. the pacing was weird and miaʼs character wasnʼt adding up a tiny bit anymore, plus there were development issues with miaʼs relationships. i also enjoyed the red church and the world building in the first two books, but they were barely explored in this book. mentoinable lacks of description when we were introduced new places. and literally nothing happens until the last quarter? nothing surprised me, the book was just boring as f. i donʼt think i will ever reread even one of these books and also wonʼt recommend any of these books to anyone – no one should read such a good start with such a shit ending, honestly.

i know that this is nothing about the books anymore, but people have to start talking about this. jay kristoff is highly problematic and shouldnʼt be supported financially or mentally. not just is his nevernight series anti-indigenous, but also anti-semitic for a reason thatʼs already been said. while i appreciate the change of the name, why name this character like God* anyway? kristoff is a grown up man, heʼs responsible for his own actions and shouldʼve thought that through. some people say it features the fetishization of f/f couples and the sexualisation of a sixteen year old ( i didnʼt see any fetishization while reading ( please educate me! )). stormdancer is japanese inspired and includes cultural appropriation, he also explained that his research included “getting asian friends to yell at him angrily” and watching anime, which apperently was a joke, but still completely dismisses the importance of research ( to accurately represent cultures ). he also remained silent about #stopasianhate. he also called a black blogger discussing diversity in the industry a, quote, “worthless voice“.
