I was stopped by no fewer than 3 absolute strangers that told me that they loved The Fifth Season while reading it in public. Now that I’ve finished it, I, too, will join the ranks of the Jemisin apostles. It takes all of the best elements of the genre (cultural criticism, analytical foresight, philosophical questioning, etc.) and executes them flawlessly. I came to this book seeking an otherworldly escape and received that without being let off the hook content-wise on emotional depth and critical thinking.
