The majority of the book explains his concept of "political hobbyism" - that most of what we call "following the news" or "politics" is just hobbyism, that it serves no real purpose other than to entertain us daily for a short bit of time. Other writers will says that it's actually bad for us but Hirsch doesn't go there for the most part. He just argues that it really serves no purpose. That part is all rather damning and I saw myself in his explanation over and over. (Especially good - White people spend more time reading the news, but less time being actually active than minorities. Cuz, duh, white people mostly have what they need.)
That leaves you wondering what you should do? What is a more impactful, productive use of that time? Here, I think Hirsch falls well short. His main thrust - being involved in your community, building alliances I can get behind. The description of that, from what he did personally, sounds like a huge waste of time -- that it would be nearly as pointless as reading the news.
But maybe that's the bottom line. It's hard. It's time intensive. It's not a clear path from what you want to getting the power you seek.
Which leads to Mark Manson and the idea of "that thing you think you want. If you're not putting in the work, maybe you really don't want it". Maybe I don't and I should drop this bad hobby I have.
