The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

4.0

This is an extraordinary work, tracking the histories of three individuals as representatives of the whole of the great African-American migration from the South, 1915-1970.

Wilkerson weaves the individual stories with data from the period, and focuses on the areas from which and to which the each of the individuals moved, creating detailed depictions of home in both the new and old environments, recounting the challenges of each.

The book is engaging, and the stories are compelling. Even the statistics are compelling.

It seems as if she may have written three books, thought better of it, and combined them into one sweeping "epic," a term for which I think the work qualifies. My only quibble is that some of the statistics are repeated, occasionally more than once. I found this annoying.

Highly recommended.
