Coraline by Neil Gaiman

This is like a better, creepy version of Alice in Wonderland that has more continuity and doesn't feel like a random psychedelic trip. I thoroughly enjoyed basically everything about it!

It feels to me like a fairly normal children's adventure fairytale, full of reinforcement of the love of a family, tiny details of childhood perspectives and thought processes that make you grin with nostalgia as an adult, and a healthy acceptance of the more mundane moments of real life - all composing an imaginative adventure carrying you through past humor and horror at once. It's a spooky, eerie kind of creepy book, and I could see it giving some children nightmares, mostly because a lot of the creep factor is being unsafe in the dark at night in your own home. I also don't think you'd enjoy it if you weren't already interested at all in feeling a little creeped out here or there. I happen to love that, so it added to the experience for me. If you enjoy the movie, this is very similar, so I'd say you would absolutely love the book, too.

Side note: I listened to Space Captain Space read it aloud on YouTube, and he did a masterful job. I almost finished it in just one day. Definitely check it out!
