Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry
medium-paced
3.5
As always, Henry’s writing is good. The characters are cute and the dialogue flows nicely. Overall this book was good, but not great.
This isn’t really a «normal» romcom, as it focuses mostly on a family saga through an interview setting. Normally I’d love that (I like my romance with plot), but this one just didn’t hit. I think the main issue is that neither the romance nor the other plot is fletched out enough, meaning the whole book just falls a little short.
Firstly, the romance. The love interest is good, but the «love story» feels inorganic. There is NO reason for them not to be together, so Henry just keeps making up half assed reasons. Made me annoyed. The book also includes a third act conflict/miscommunication which I hate. The whole thing just felt a little «simple».
As for the family saga, it tried to evoke feelings that I never felt. We didn’t get to know the characters well enough. Also, the «plot twists» weren’t twisting. Anyways, it’s very clear that Henry is a fan of Evelyn Hugo.
