Foundation by Isaac Asimov
3.0
Foundation is the beginning of Asimov’s epic and encapsulates the first two eras of his Foundation history split into three POVs.
The first I liked because I had the context from Prelude to Foundation. It basically is the end of Seldon’s life and deposits his followers in a place where history can begin. Shorter than I thought, but nice.
The second involves the new generation under the Foundation and my favorite character; Salvor Hardin. His story in this giant puzzle is easily the most gripping and dramatic.
The last section about the second crisis that introduces the merchant princes...yeah, didn’t like it too much. Found it quite boring and the characters presented there are hard to like, let alone enjoy.
This book covers 5 short stories (essentially) as well as the first few centuries of the Foundation. It started off great but meandered into a puttered puff of smoke by the end. Interested to read more, but definitely a hard recommendation.
