Delightfully dark and absolutely disgusting. A Gothic horror that is cleverly and tightly plotted - I really enjoy novels that put you inside the perspective of an unlikeable or unrelatable character, and Winnifred Nortty is admirably both.
A gory black comedy and tongue in cheek commentary on Victorian repression, classism, and giving in to the intrusive thoughts. It's weakest when it's trying too hard to make a "statement" - Winnifred's deadpan observations and deadly inclinations speak quite sufficiently on their own. There were a few sentences I found distasteful in a negative way, but overall, thoroughly enjoyable read with a satisfying ending.
Make sure to read all the trigger warnings, because this book touches on a lot of them - it's a book about a psychopathic governess, after all.
