Going back through this series for the first time in over a decade with current world events has been painful. There are scenes in this book that make me sick to my stomach knowing what is going on in our reality. There’s certainly something to be said when a series holds its relevancy.
I’m personally fine with the “lack of action” in this book as I think the mind games of it all is just as important. Where this misses the mark for me is the ending; I’m not sure I can see past its feeling of convenience. It feels like there were pieces left unfinished that we don’t get closure for, and generally rushed considering everything that led up to the ending.
For example, can we talk about Katniss wanting the Capitol children to be part of the Hunger Games? And then it’s never discussed again? I can’t truly believe she would get to that point and want retribution.
I also feel indifferent towards Katniss being romantically linked to either Peeta OR Gale. Gale is kind of a brat so Peeta would feel like the right pick, but even then it feels like a relationship born out of trauma and proximity. I do think there’s love but is it just friends? Them having children way in the future also feels nice but still doesn’t feel quite like Katniss. Maybe it’s because of Peeta’s of total loss of family and then Katniss also losing hers between death and distance. I’m on the fence about it.
