Sohn der Vergangenheit
by A.C. Crispin
I’m a big AC Crispin fan, but I had never read her first books. You can tell it’s a first novel to some extent, it feels a bit more tentative than her other tie-in books, less willing to assert creative control over existing characters. I know most people like fan service, but I hate Trek books that feel obligated to call-back to Past episodes rather than forging new ground. This book calls back to at least three different episodes. The story is pretty classic - missing child turns up and there is misunderstanding between parent motives and child’s perception and expectations.
What carries this book is Ann’s mastery of pacing and ability to get to the heart of characters quickly. While the “big misunderstanding” type plot is as old as time, it works here because Spock is Spock and the way he acts is consistent with his character. She also brings in Zar and develops him pretty substantially considering the short length of the story and the ensemble cast from the show.
