The Whispers by Greg Howard

I liked it. The book kept me intrigued and dragged me along this mystery of finding out where Riley's mom is. I knew this was going to be a psychological ending with no magical aspect whatsoever like A Monster Calls, I Fight Giants, and Bridge to Terabithia. I was totally ok with that since I really liked his interactions with the real world. Him coming to terms with his sexuality in a blind way compared to other books I've read. It was interesting to see his perspective on it and how his issues were created, leading to his denial of his mother's death. I thought the absolute worst and that is my fault. I thought there were more nefarious things going on like, for example, I thought right up until the cancer reveal that his mother was actually murdered in front of him and he hadn't come to terms with that. And I actually felt disappointed because I was reading the book as a mystery instead of what it actually was.
