Hero
by Michael Grant
The original Gone series was one of my favourite series I read during my teenage years. Partly because each book had coloured pages to match the title, but mainly because the series was just incredible. The opening of Plague was so powerful it put my brother off continuing for about 18 months, and just in general I found the series a brilliant read, so much so I went back and read them all a couple of years later which I so rarely do!
It's been clear throughout this trilogy that the quality is a bit of a step below the original series. There isn't quite the same depth, and the writing doesn't quite evoke such vivid images, even in instances such as when we meet Vector where if anything the scene is more ghastly than ever before. But that being said, I still really enjoyed this trilogy, and this book in particular. For me everything was a bit too simple in this book - after the tussle between Astrid and Drake lasted 6 books, can it really be satisfactorily ended in a single chapter? Still, this is a fun superhero trilogy that will get bonus points for reminding me of one of my favourite childhood series. Of course I wish that these were fleshed out to the extent of the originals, but if you accept that just isn't the case then you'll still enjoy what you do read.
Overall this book has the typical fast paced plot, a new supervillain for our characters to try to defeat, and elements of many other series from the genre. As for the ending, I feel like he could have left it at the end of the Vector fight. What came after probably opened up more questions than answers, but as he says in the acknowledgements, that gives plenty of scope for fan fiction for those who are interested.
[Side note - Definitely interesting to read this book about a plague and the collapse of civilisation as the COVID-19 pandemic is in action, does make you think a little!]
