A Not So Meet Cute by Meghan Quinn

3.0

I chose this book based on all of the hype I’ve seen about Meghan Quinn. And I really enjoy romcoms and the fake dating trope, so I was super excited to read this one. Which is why I am so bummed that it was such a letdown for me. I almost DNF about halfway through. Here are my thoughts:

-Soooo much millennial cringe. Within the span of two pages Lottie mentions the 84 years titanic meme, bro, and chef’s kiss. As a millennial, I do appreciate a small amount of millennial cringe, but Jesus. This book was RIPE with it. And it wasn’t funny cringe. Just cringe cringe. It felt like the author was trying too hard.
-Huxley was such a dick!!! Like he was so nice to Lottie when they met, when they were at Chipotle, and when he came to her house. But then a switch flipped and he was just so rude. And I know he put up some walls because he didn’t want to fall for her, but there’s a difference between being a professional and just straight up being an asshole.
-Lottie was also kind of a dick. She had every right to be a dick to him when he was being an ass, but I feel like she was pretty rude too.
-It felt very much like Beauty and the Beast, which Lottie even mentioned at some point, which I wasn’t a huge fan of. Which brings me to my next point…
-The description of this book is not accurate. Not only is she his fake fiancé, she’s fake pregnant. I don’t like fake/real pregnancies in romcoms. I just think it’s unnecessary. And I get that it made sense for the story, as far as their relationship with Dave and Ellie and the activities they do together, but idk. I think the fake fiancé was enough. Also in the book description, Huxley is described as insufferable. Which I think is putting it lightly.
-I HATE that Huxley is such an alpha. If I had known that I wouldn’t have read it. I don’t like alphas in real life, I certainly don’t want to read about them in a romcom.
-It was super weird to me how Kelsey was ALWAYS on Huxley’s side. No matter what, she was always on his side and trying to stick up for him and change Lottie’s mind. It’s one thing to play devil’s advocate, and try and help Lottie see things from another perspective, but Kelsey was just straight up on Huxley’s side. If my sister told me some of the stuff he was doing/saying, I’d set his house on fire. It was almost like Kelsey was into him.
-The smut. Ugh. The first smutty scene was weird. So out of place and just. Idk. Not a fan. And don’t even get me started on the dry humping. And…
-TW SA- Lottie having sex with Huxley while he was asleep????! Wtf. Repulsive. Weird. Horrible. WTF. Not ok. Literal sexual assault. It’s not “hot.”
-The whole wrap up with Dave felt very rushed and weird. Like he was so chill about them lying. Idk. Obviously it needs to have a happy ending. But it was just odd to me, the way it wrapped up so quickly and perfectly. Like how Dave was just like “haha you lied that makes me like you.”
-Getting real engaged at the end was WILD. They had known each other for what? A month at that point? Please. Save that for the epilogue. Like a one year later situation.

All that being said. I didn’t completely hate it. Once they got together for real the book was much better. I actually enjoyed them as a real couple, when they were being nice and respectful to each other they had great chemistry and seemed to really enjoy being together. I also didn’t hate the third act breakup. I thought I was pretty realistic. A little out of character for Huxley to just fly off the handle like that, rather than just ask Lottie if she said anything, but I get that he was overwhelmed and in shock. And I thought Lottie’s reaction was very realistic. And I liked Huxley’s grand gesture (minus the proposal).

Would I recommend this book to someone else? Probably not. I bought the entire series at once, so I am going to read the rest of them. I’m hoping the next two are better than the first one.
