Took me a bit to get used to the writing style but I really enjoyed it. I don’t want to really judge it based on that because I’m unsure if it was intentional to convey the world or just the way fantasy was written in the 60s. I didn’t particularly like it but I could still understand what was going on. I vaguely remember attempting to read these books as a kid and struggled but as an adult it was much easier.

I picked this up because as a dragon lover this is more or less the series that inspired all others so it was really fun to see where all the, now very standard, dragon rider tropes come from. It did however leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth about Fourth Wing in particular, as there are some basic structures that I would argue are less inspired by and more straight up theft (wings, wingleaders, impression, Xaden and Violets similarity to F’lar and Lessa, etc).

As a note, I had been warned that the relationship between the two MCs  was very of its time in regards to consent and domestic violence. It didn’t rise to the level of ick I thought it would but there is some dubious consent and I was a bit surprised by the dv. That being said the relationship does develop and become very sweet and the MCs are similar age adults (I think they’re both supposed to be early-mid 20s). I could see why this series is drawn so heavily by modern romantasy authors. I’ll definitely be reading the next one.
