I was 12 in 1989, and I loved the Disney movie. A retelling of this story with LatinX protagonists, it feels like this book was meant for me.

The author speaks both to a younger audience, and to us GenXs.

“Our generation needs nostalgia to cope with crippling anxiety.” She’s not wrong.

When Ariel says, “Am I too young to have hot flashes?” Yes you are, but also we know what those feel like.

Things I liked and won’t take questions at the moment:

Eric was aware of his ultra hotness at several points in the story and he was never a jerk about it. Sometimes when the guys or girls are so attractive but oblivious to it, it can be annoying.
The kissed in the canoe! With a song playing, he 🎼Kissed the Girl🎵!!! Several times 💜 I found it sexy.
I appreciated she wasn’t a virgin but Eric had to say “I love you” before they had sex. Oh well no one’s perfect.
Eric relistened to Siren Seven, appreciating the music and talent. Like a Taylor-Travis moment.
I was not expecting the sexy times, closed door.

Edit mistake: On Ch 22 p 276, Eric thinks about her and names her Ariel, but her full identity hadn’t been revealed.
