DaR by Jennifer Julie Miller
4.0

Good

Note: this is a spin-off from the Forsaken series by the author, and although it can be read as a standalone, there are small spoilers for the last book in that series.

A brutal attack by monstrous aliens, kills Kira’s husband, and takes her to a planet far away from Earth.
On the brink of bleeding to death, she is sold in a slave auction, where DaR rescues her and vows that she will never be harmed again.

This book begins with a very traumatic event. The heroine suffers a brutal and violent attack by aliens, one that kills her husband and although she isn’t raped, she is severely injured- mentally and physically.
The story therefore, is really about coming to terms with everything she has lost, and finding the strength to move on even as your former life is destroyed.
The romance is really only an aspect of that story, so it is slow burn, and there are minimal sex scenes.
The heroine (and hero) are older, both with grown and flown children, and though this is integral to the story, it doesn’t really affect their behaviour much.

It’s an engaging read, with interesting characters and a slightly different take on the aliens, and an intriguing link to the aforementioned precursor series.

An enjoyable, and slightly different sci-fi romance for SFR fans.
