Overall this book sucked me in. I loved the different perspectives, even the random ones from one-time characters. I found it poignant and heartfelt.
Ok, sometimes the pacing was a bit off, and the world-building around the Death Call wasn't there at all (its all a mystery). But I didn't even mind the youth slang that Rufus spoke in. Or the hesitant life Mateo lived. Or the awkward and clunky way their relationship developed. And it ended quite abruptly which was a little jarring. But I still loved it.
