This book was a happy surprise. I initially picked up the audiobook of Blue Sisters because it was available to borrow and popular on Libby. Its cover caught my attention, and a quick skim of the description intrigued me.
The author managed to create realistically flawed characters, whose choices had me gasping out loud at times. Although I found some of them extremely unlikeable (e.g., Avery, a cheater with an egocentric victim mindset, and Bonnie, who, given her background as a badass boxer, had so much potential to be a more interesting character), I appreciated the authenticity of their personalities as well as their (at times dysfunctional) relationships. I wish some storylines had been different (for instance, I wish Bonnie’s love for Pavlov had not been reciprocated, and that she had grown out of it) but I still accepted them and thought they were believable.
Grief is an ever-present theme in this book, and, to me, it’s the strongest part of the story. It’s clear that the three sisters have been suffering for the past year, their lives going completely off the rails after such a traumatic event. Their grief isn’t gone by the end of the book, it will remain part of their lives forever.
