Ninth Ward by Jewell Parker Rhodes

3.0

This was a good book. The voice of Lanesha feels authentic for her age and location. The story was interesting, I guess I was just expecting more from it. While the experience of the hurricane and flood were presented as scary, I felt they could have been a little more terrifying, but this could be due to the fact that it is a children's book. I also wish the book had continued a little more. I am sure the author wanted to end on a high note so as not to leave kids really depressed, but I felt there could have been a little more to show the complete devastation of the Ninth Ward. It is a good tie in for teachers and could make for good discussion as to what the characters may experience next.
