The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander
2.5
adventurous lighthearted
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No

This, as well as the second book in the Chronicles of Prydain series, as well as one or two elements from the later books in the series inspired the 1985 Disney movie, The Black Cauldron. I remember watching this YEARS ago and really enjoyed this little known Disney film as it was so dark compared to its others. So much so I got the first on my kindle and it sat, waiting.

I, impulsively, decided to read it this month because I had an itch to read a short, fast fantasy.

I struggled with this. It was a bit cheesy and I couldn’t get away from how “white male power fantasy” it was. A young, unremarkable protagonist who rises to power/is the Chosen One, and must save the world. Because of that, they gain power, status, the love interest, etc.

If you are starting off in fantasy (this is a middle grade series), maybe this would be good place to start, but this series was written in the late 60s so bear in mind with the writing style. But if you are a big fantasy reader, this might not work for you as you will see so many troupes used better in other stories.
