City of Bones by Michael Connelly

A dog finds bones in the hills. They turn out to be the bones of a child.

Amazon's first season of Bosch is based on this book. That's my first exposure to these stories. Of course, there are a number of things changed, but the basic elements are all shared. One main difference is
SpoilerBosch decides to retire at the end of the book.

There's a longer hold for the next book at my library, and I'm glad. I like these stories, but sometimes they're a bit too much. The absolute moral rightness of the protagonist, the way police are presented ("the Blue Religion" here), the way criminals are presented. Connelly does better than some, but it still gets to me after a bit.

Still, something about these stories keeps bringing me back. I think it's nice to imagine that there's a more clear cut right and wrong. That there are clear heroes. But there are tropes I wish were different.

For example, I wish there were stories that presented police oversight groups in a positive light. I'd especially like to find some with members as protagonists. If anyone knows of stories like this, please let me know. I haven't been able to find them.
