We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

mysterious fast-paced

5.0

We were liars by E. Lockhart was an intense novel that I really enjoyed. It had a creative writing style and an ending that I did not see coming (but hindsight is 20/20). Lockhart writes from the perspective of a girl with a traumatic head injury suffering from memory loss as she tries to remember how her injury occurred. Her past and present are presented in various chapters that in theory could allow the reader to piece together the cause of the injury, but I did not pick up on it until the main character did. Personally, being surprised made me love the book so much more. I also loved the way the book was written. It was sometimes poetic, sometimes very narrative. I felt as if I was in the main character’s head for a lot of the book. The writing included personification of emotion, adjectives used as nouns, and the use of fairy tales to illustrate a larger idea. I loved the unique style of it. The book pulled me in and made me cry. It was emotional and relatable. My one disappointment was that I felt privilege was under addressed because it was consistently brought up and then never fleshed out. Although it may not be for everyone I loved this book.
